At least 150 people have been killed and 15000 homeless in a strong earthquake in south-west Pakistan.

The mayor of the town of Ziarat, in Pakistan's Baluchistan province, says several houses collapsed in the pre-dawn earthquake.

The US Geological survey says an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 was centred about 70 kilometres north-east of the city of Quetta.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department put the magnitude at 6.1 and said the earthquake struck at 5:10am (local time).

A resident of Quetta says there were two tremors and the second one was serious.

Hospital officials in Quetta say people were injured when mud walls collapsed onto them or they were caught up in the panic when people rushed from their homes.

The region's worst earthquake was in 2005 when about 75,000 people were killed in northern Pakistan.
