Equestrian, eventing dressage
Riders gathered 1,200 miles outside Beijing at the competition venue in Hong Kong to take part in day one of athletic competition. U.S. rider Gina Miles finished third in the very early rounds of competition, which continues tomorrow morning at 7:15 a.m. EST. Riders will then compete tomorrow evening (6:30 p.m. EST), which will be streamed live on NBCOlympics.com.
Women's basketball, Group A, Belarus vs. Australia
The Aussies, led by Seattle Storm "big man" Lauren Jackson, defeated Belarus 83-64 in their first game of Olympic competition. Jackson, who is competing in her third Olympic Games led the team in scoring with 18 points.
Shooting, women's air rifle

Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic was awarded the first medal of 2008 Olympics' this evening after winning the 10-meter air rifle. Emmons may not be a member of Team USA, but she is married to Matt Emmons, a U.S. shooter from Colorado. The two met four years ago at the Athens Games and now they are both back to compete in Beijing.
Shooting, men's air pistol
Only the top eight contenders in the men's air pistol qualifying rounds move on to the finals. U.S. shooters Jason Turner and Brian Beaman finished 4th and 6th, and moved on to the final round.
Judo, women's 48 kg and men's 60kg
Bronx, New York native Taraje Williams-Murray, and four-time Olympic medalist, Ryoko Tani, both advanced in early matches.
Weightlifting, women's 48kg
With a total score of 212 kilograms, China's Chen Xiexia took home the first gold medal of the Games for the host country.
Rowing, women's single sculls
Michelle Guerette was the top American finisher in the women's single sculls.
Swimming, men's 400 individual medley
Michael Phelps shredded the water, ranking first in his heat in the men's 400 individual medley relay with a final time of 4:07:82 while Ryan Lochte followed suit in the heat before, coming in first with a final time of 4:10:33.
Women's soccer
Midfielder Carli Lloyd scored a goal for U.S. women's soccer to lead the team to a 1-0 win over Japan.
